Toasting… Smashing Pumpkins – Today

It was the 2nd single (after ‘Cherub Rock‘) from ‘Siamese Dream‘ that Smashing Pumpkins released back in September 1993, that caught the media attention and propelled the band to mainstream success.

The song’s upbeat and catchy melody, combined with its relatable lyrics about feeling trapped and seeking escape, resonated with audiences and helped make ‘Siamese Dream‘ one of the defining albums of the ’90s alternative rock era. Billy Corgan’s performance was a distinctive high-pitched and nasal tone, which is a trademark of his vocal style, and most of us love to love, while a few love to hate. This 90s magnum opus features heavily distorted and overdriven guitar riffs, with Billy Corgan and James Iha’s guitars playing in unison throughout much of the song.

The accompanying music video, directed by Stéphane Sednaoui, was absolutely, super cool, and got repeated airplay on the “good-old” MTV.

Today is the greatest
Today is the greatest day
Today is the greatest day
That I have ever really known
